I don’t know

I have been staring at my screen for about 30 minutes trying to write but I was really procrastinating by scrolling through Twitter. I am exhausted from it. All those issues, all the problems our country is having, it made me feel uninspired. It did not make me pissed off and want to act, it made me sad. I thought, what is the point of fighting so hard when it seems like things are getting worse? And that thought scared me.

I had to take a step back and remember my job is not to save the world. All I ask of myself is to not turn a blind eye to what is going on in our country. When I feel like I need to turn away in order to take care of myself, I do but I take one simple idea with me. This stuff starts at home.

If we are not making careers or lives out being activists that is fine but these issues that are going on in our country have to do with being human. So when we turn on the news and we hear of tragedies and we turn away, we are failing humanity by not acknowledging what is going on. Solving the issues of this country begins with acknowledging that there are issues in this country.

I was watching the news the other day after the terrorist attack in New York, there was a women saying how she was not going to explain what happened to her daughter. I was shocked because this girl had been at one of the schools right by what had happened. All you have to say to your kids is that there are bad people in the world who do bad things. All you have to say to your kids is not to be fearful because there is bad in the world but to be hopeful because there are people determined to stop it. I am not a parent, but that is what I would tell my kids.

Not acknowledging something does not make it go away. How do you think our country got into such a mess in the first place? By pretending that things that matter weren’t as big of a deal as they are. The things that are going on in our country matter. We don’t have to go out and be activists for all the issues. All we have to do is see the problems and acknowledge them. All we have to do is make sure those around us see the problems and acknowledge them too. Because that is what it means to be human, acknowledging the hard things and sharing them with others. Our country is in the midst of a humanity crisis and it effect all of us.
